Matthew 21:2-3 Saying unto them, Go into the village over against you, and straightway ye shall find an ass tied, and a colt with her: loose them, and bring them unto me. And if any man say ought unto you, ye shall say, The Lord hath need of them; and straightway he will send them.
I found myself interested in just a couple of things this morning from this passage. This passage is a fulfillment of the prophecy of Zechariah, that our Lord would ride the donkey into Jerusalem to indicate His humility. I also believe He rode both the mature donkey and the unbroken colt into the city. I believe that the mature donkey represented the people of Israel. Israel had been trained in the ways of God. They had for sure developed some bad habits and had become stubborn in ways like the characteristics of a donkey. I believe the unbroken colt represented the Gentiles that would soon be brought into the fold. The Gentiles were represented by the untamed, wild nature that you find in an unbroken colt.
Two concepts catch my eye in this passage. One is the freedom of the unbroken colt. Like society today without the government of the Holy Spirit, we talk of our rights and change the definition of true freedom. The freedom that the world is longing for now is freedom with no laws at all. The freedom the world preaches about is freedom from God. Unfortunately, In the Church of our western culture, we have adopted a feel good, do whatever we want to do kind of Christianity, which is a kind of freedom the world longs for, one without laws. This kind of rogue, renegade living has no freedom at all, but has the allurement of all the freedom in the world. To be a slave to yourself is the worst kind of slavery. Sadly, this is where most of us spend our time. We follow our own ambitions, dreams, and plans without considering our calling and place in the kingdom of God. To understand the freedom that is ours through Jesus Christ sets us free from the tyranny of self and into the glorious government of God.
The other concept from this passage that captures my heart, is what the Lord told them to say if anyone asked why they were taking the donkey and the colt. Jesus said to tell them, the Lord hath need of them. Our Lord requires their service. To contemplate the thought that the Lord Jesus needs me is almost too wonderful to consider. Can you imagine that the Lord needs you in His service? Can you imagine what Jesus is saying right now, go get that untamed, unbroken, stubborn colt and bring him to me for I need Him. Jesus is saying, He wants to set us truly free. Jesus wants us to know the freedom that only comes through submission to Him. His yoke is easy, and His burden is light. He gives freedom through His government that leads us into the peace and tranquility that the world is trying to gain through the means of the intellectual government of man.
To everyone who feels unworthy because of your past rebellion and stubborn behavior, our Lord has need of you. He really does have a purpose to give to you. He has a design for your life that sets you free and manifests His kingdom in your life. To all those who feel as though you are useless and just a castaway, the call is now being offered, the king of all glory has need of you. The misfits, the misunderstood, the ones wandering in the field all alone, Jesus the prince of heaven has need of you. I’m in His service simply because He has found a use for me, and in Him, I have a purpose.
