Cultural Relevance

John 1:1 says, In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  Matthew 24:35 says, Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.  Psalm 119:89 says, For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.

Every issue we face in America both politically and in the Church comes down to a single thing.  Do we believe the bible or not?  There is no issue that the bible does not have the answer for.  We should not decide where we stand on an issue based on politics or religion.  We should be people of the Word.  We talk a lot about needing revival, and I believe we do.  The greatest need we have is for the people of God to experience a revival of the Word of God.

Power is released through the Word of God.  From out of nothing our God spoke everything into existence.  The earth is a manifestation of the power of the Word of God.  Man is a manifestation of the power of the Word of God.  Every living creature is a manifestation of the power of the Word of God.  The power of God released through the Word of God is always consistent with the character of God.  In the beginning, was the Word.  This is power.  The Word was with God.  This is His presence.  The Word was God.  This is His character.

Based on this we know that the Word of God transcends time.  Based on this we know that the Word of God transcends culture.  Based on this the Word of God transcends the issues of any day.  What we need is to discover what God says about every issue and line up with the Word of God instead of trying to make the Word of God line up with us.  What seems to be happening in our day today is that we are trying to make the gospel of Jesus Christ relevant in our culture.  The gospel does not fit in any culture.  The gospel of Jesus Christ puts us in His culture.  For example:

SALVATION:  We love to talk about God’s gift of salvation, and we should.  We love to talk about salvation being by grace through faith, and we should.  We love to talk about how the Father in heaven will save to the uttermost anyone who will come to Him through the sacrifice of Christ on the cross, and we should.  However, we told it is not culturally relevant or fashionable to tell people they are lost and in sin and destined for Hell.  The problem is you cannot get people saved unless you tell them they are lost.  Before there can be a revelation of Christ there must first be a revelation of yourself.  Before you can receive the revelation of Jesus Christ as healer, you must first receive the revelation that you’re sick. Before you receive the revelation of Jesus Christ as the provider, you must first receive the revelation that you are in need.  Before you can receive the revelation of Jesus Christ as Savior you must first receive the revelation that you are lost.

LIVING RIGHT:  We love to talk about living for God.  We love to talk about serving God.  We love to talk about being close to God.  However, it is no longer culturally relevant or fashionable to tell people they are living wrong.  The problem is unless you tell people what living wrong is they will live wrong and call it living right.  The Word of God says in Isaiah 5:20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil.  How many issues that faces our nation today are an attempt to call evil good, and good evil.  Could it be that those that live in constant immorality and try to justify it are doing that very thing?

REVIVAL:  Oh how we love to talk about revival.  It is sweet to talk about God through His Spirit setting down with us in power.  It is wonderful to talk about those who come to full faith in Christ.  It is wonderful to talk about the miracles associated with a move of God’s Spirit in revival.  However, it is no longer relevant or fashionable to tell people what it is that hinders revival.  The problem is that unless we are willing to humble ourselves, and spend time in prayer, and confess the sin in our life, and turn from the wickedness of our own heart then we will never experience the refreshing power of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

It is time that we forsake being accepted by those who are merely seeking cultural relevance and cling to the only thing that will lead us into the power and presence of God, which is the Word of God.
