Two Become One

Over the years in and outside the church, I have seen men who treat their wives like secondhand material. They would talk down to them and treat them like they were ignorant of what was going on at the time. They treat their wives like slaves, to have sex on command and if the wife did not want to engage in sexual relations, they would bring up Bible verses like  1 Corinthians 7:4 here it says a woman does not have authority over her own body but the husband has that authority.

In Genesis 2:24, we read that a man will leave his father and mother and become one with his wife. When we get married, we take a vow. A vow is a promise that you make to your wife before God and a group of witnesses. After the wedding you and your wife go on your honeymoon, where you engage in sexual relations and I believe at that time you and your wife become one. Adam stated in Genesis 2:23, that Eve was bone of his bone and flesh of his flesh. On the night of the honeymoon, I believe, that you enter covenant with your wife by joining in that intimate moment.

We promised that as a husband we would cherish our wife in sickness and health, for richer or poorer, until death do us part. This covenant is not broken unless you die, or your wife is unfaithful according to Matthew 19:9.  Your wife should be your best friend, the one you go to in time of need, to get advice or to lean on. I have been married for twenty years and that is a short time compared to others, but in that twenty years, I have learned that there are things that my wife is better at than myself and my wife will tell you that I am better at certain things.

According to Matthew 19:6, when we get married, we are no longer two but one before God. So, what God has joined, let it not be separated by man. We should treat our wives like they are a part of our person, because they are according to Genesis 2:23,24 and Matthew 19:5. If you treat your wife wrong by talking down to her, physically harming her or being unfaithful, you are doing this to yourself, because according to God’s word you are one.
