When the people find out they can make theologies that negate the teachings of Jesus, that will herald the end of faithfulness. The greatest concern for the church is the kingdom of God unless it decides to become a mirror of the world with its quest for preeminence over others, The one who came to serve - not to be served - offered the most haunting question of wondering when he comes, shall he find faith upon the earth? The definite article “the” (usually left out of translations but is in the Greek text) makes it plain that he is looking for a particular kind - the kind mirrored in another question:”Why do you call me ‘Lord’ but don’t do the things I say?” A dairy farmer I know once showed me the truth of this when he shared that God is waiting for us to do what we already know before worrying about what else there is to add to the list. The only real end times revival we need is a simple recovery of faithfulness to his teachings. Admittedly, it’s as boring as a small mustard seed, but if faithfully tended, it grows into a tree more wondrous than the dung we’re presently pursuing. Jesus was smart enough to turn down all the kingdoms of the world. I reckon the story was preserved so we’d be smart enough to do it when our turn came.
