Today is a fresh invitation to love. A love that awakens potential. A love that calls to love as he loves.
“If anyone boasts, “I love God,” and goes right on hating (not fully loving) his brother or sister, thinking nothing of it, he is a liar. If he won’t love the person he can see, how can he love the God he can’t see? Loving God includes loving people. You’ve got to love both.” (1 John 4: 20-21, Msg). There are no options or negations in true love. It is the way it is-all or none.
God is love. When we take up permanent residence in a life of love, we live in God and God lives in us. This way, love has the run of the house, becomes mature in us, so that we’re free of worry on Judgment Day—our standing in the world is identical with Christ’s. There is no room in love for fear. Well-formed love banishes fear. All fear. Since fear is crippling, a fearful life—fear of death, fear of judgment—is one not yet fully formed in love.
Our fears, prejudices and judgments must be swallowed whole by his love. His love will leave no wiggle room. His quality and manner of love is wholly unique and totally other than anything else that holds itself out as love. Imagine this-the greatest aspect of his love is that through the love of God our standing in the world is identical to Christ’s. By receiving and living in this love, we will have total confidence on the day of reckoning, when all will give account.
Thus, it would be prudent to invite this love to mature and have the run of our house now! What are some of its qualities? “This love is very patient and kind, never jealous or envious, never boastful or proud, 5 never haughty or selfish or rude. Love does not demand its own way. It is not irritable or touchy. It does not hold grudges and will hardly even notice when others do it wrong. 6 It is never glad about injustice, but rejoices whenever truth wins out. 7 If you love someone, you will be loyal to him no matter what the cost. You will always believe in him, always expect the best of him, and always stand your ground in defending him.” (1 Cor. 13: 4-7, TLB).
3 We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they are good for us—they help us learn to be patient. 4 And patience develops strength of character in us and helps us trust God more each time we use it until finally our hope and faith are strong and steady. 5 Then, when that happens, we can hold our heads high no matter what happens and know that all is well, for we know how dearly God loves us, and we feel this warm love everywhere within us because God has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love. (Romans 5: 3-5, TLB)
