Nurtured by What You Treasure

“Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.” (Luke 2:19 NIV)

What an interesting response to all the incredible events Mary had just gone through. I mean, really; finding out from the Angel Gabriel (in person) that she was to be impregnated by God and chosen to carry the fetus of the Son of God; as a virgin, no less. And then being troubled as to what this might mean for an unmarried mother-to-be in her day and culture. Discovering that instead of being stigmatized and possibly stoned to death she was “highly favored by God.”

And if that weren’t enough; her baby leapt in her womb, full of the Holy Spirit from conception. Simply her presence caused her cousin Elizabeth to be baptized in the same Holy Spirit as she carried John, the fore-runner of Jesus. Mary was amazed that Elizabeth, who was quite old and had been barren, carried John and delivered him first, to prepare the way for Jesus.

If this had happened to me, I would’ve run all over the place blabbing how important and special I was. Treasuring these events and pondering them in my heart would most likely not have been my response. To treasure is to ‘retain, store carefully, and treat as precious.’

Yet, Jesus lives in the heart of every believer! Do we treasure Him? Do we treat Him as precious? Do we ponder how favored we are of God to have been chosen to carry and share the very life of God? May we be nurtured by what we treasure?
