First and Greatest

I am in a Bible study by Mike Bickle about "The First and Greatest Commandment”.  We are currently studying "Loving Ourselves in the Grace of God," and I am finding the places where I don't love myself like God loves me.  This is yucky and painful and gets in the way of other relationships.

Thankfully, we can build trustworthy relationships in the Lord with people who listen to us and love us while we confidentially dump our box of stuff and they help us sort through it.  It helps to look at emotions (especially if God created you as one of those emotional and relational personalities) and pick out belongs to us, what belongs to others, what lies we believe, etc.  Then, we can begin to love those parts of ourselves and share our feelings with others in love as appropriate, without dumping our emotional baggage on them.  I believe it is God’s protection in relationships to keep us from devastating each other.  Of course, the truth is that we will get hurt and we will hurt others, it is inevitable in life and part of learning to walk in God’s love.  It takes the love of God to love God, to love ourselves and to love others.  He is the ultimate lover and as we persistently pursue him, He will teach us how to love.

I believe this is a continual process in our walk with the Lord and is a good thing even though it is painful.  Personally, it has been a long journey and I know I have a long way to go but it is worth every step that draws us closer to the heart of God.  He is in relentless pursuit of us and will not give up.

"Jesus answered him, “The first of all the commandments is: ‘Hear, O Israel, the LORD our God, the LORD is one. And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. This is the first commandment. And the second, like it, is like this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these.”  Mark 12:29-31 NKJV
