Along Came a Spider

This morning while at work I saw one of the biggest, most beautiful, spider webs. This magnificent tapestry must have taken this little spider all night long to painstakingly weave. The little micro-droplets of dew were still on it and it glistened in the morning sun. This little spider was proudly positioned in the middle of the web as if it were saying, "Look at what I've accomplished!"

Usually I'll admit I walk around in God's creation without stopping to see the many small wonders like this. This one was back-lit with the morning sun however and demanded to be seen. However, as I marveled at the sight the smile soon faded from my face. You see, this talented little spider created a castle in the sand. He spent his whole night weaving a web within the curled up arm of an Excavator.

Having to move heavy pipe around, I got in, started it up, and began working the controls. This of course quickly destroyed the spider's work of art, and I imagine he scurried away to find another place to begin the building process again.

As I worked, the Holy Spirit brought to my mind a parable that Jesus spoke:

Matthew 7:24-27
“Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.”

If this little spider could have seen and understood what I saw from my viewpoint, then he would have sought another place to build. How often do we run around like this little spider with our own vain ambitions, goals, plans, and dreams? The whole time God, who has the ultimate vision for our lives, is watching us and seeing that we are not in the best location.

Like this little spider we just keep working though without a care in the world. We focus on the temporal, while all the while God is saying, "Look at the Eternal!" There is a bigger picture! While we are arranging these puzzle pieces called life, God is holding the box top and He alone can see the finished puzzle. Therefore, shouldn't we listen to Him?

Like the parable, this spider's home came down with a crash. He didn't know the knowledge that came from the one operating the excavator - me. Our life can also come down with a crash if we don't hear  our Lord's teaching and obey it by applying it to our everyday life. Just like the foolish builder who built his house on the sand, or just like the foolish spider who built his home on an excavator, we can build our lives on temporal, earthly, foundations, and not the solid, eternal word of God, who is our Rock! Sand moves... Excavators move... this world changes, therefore it moves... but Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Won't you build your life upon Him by trusting in Him and accepting Him as Lord? If so, please pray the following:

"Heavenly Father, have mercy on me, a sinner. I believe in you and that your word is true. I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of the living God and that he died on the cross so that I may now have forgiveness for my sins and eternal life. I know that without you in my heart my life is meaningless.I believe in my heart that you, Lord God, raised Him from the dead. Please Jesus forgive me, for every sin I have ever committed or done in my heart, please Lord Jesus forgive me and come into my heart as my personal Lord and Savior today. I need you to be my Father and my friend.
I give you my life and ask you to take full control from this moment on; I pray this in the name of Jesus Christ."
Amen.
